Diddy Seeks Transfer to Low-Security New Jersey Facility Following Conviction

Sean “Diddy” Combs, the once-powerful music industry titan whose fall from grace has captivated the World, is now asking a federal judge to allow him to serve his four-year prison sentence at a low-security facility in New Jersey, far removed from the harsh conditions of his current detention.

The 55-year-old rapper and entrepreneur, who was convicted in July on two counts of transportation for prostitution, directed his appeal to U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian on Monday. His legal team is specifically requesting a transfer to the Federal Correctional Institution at Fort Dix, a minimum-security prison located in Burlington County, New Jersey.

Since his arrest in September 2024, Combs has been confined to the Special Housing Unit at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center, a facility that has garnered widespread notoriety for its deplorable conditions. The MDC has long been criticized by inmates, attorneys, and civil rights advocates alike for issues ranging from violence and inadequate medical care to power outages and rodent infestations.

The request comes on the heels of what has been described as a highly anticipated trial that drew intense media scrutiny and public attention. Combs’ conviction marked a stunning reversal of fortune for the man who built a business empire spanning music production, fashion, and spirits, and who once stood among the most influential figures in entertainment.

FCI Fort Dix, by contrast, is classified as a low-security federal prison that typically houses non-violent offenders. The facility offers more lenient conditions than maximum or medium-security institutions and would represent a significant improvement over the conditions at MDC Brooklyn.

Judge Subramanian has yet to rule on the motion. Legal experts note that while defendants can request specific facilities, the Bureau of Prisons ultimately maintains discretion over inmate placement, taking into account factors such as security level, proximity to family, and available programs.

The outcome of this request could determine where Combs spends the next four years as he begins this new chapter following his dramatic fall from the pinnacle of American entertainment.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Sean “Diddy” Combs, convicted in July on prostitution-related charges, is asking to serve his four-year sentence at a low-security New Jersey prison instead of Brooklyn’s notorious Metropolitan Detention Center, where he’s been held since September 2024.

The request to Judge Subramanian seeks a transfer to FCI Fort Dix, a facility with significantly better conditions than his current harsh detention. The judge has yet to rule, though the Bureau of Prisons will make the final placement decision.
