Nigerian musician David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, stirred both political and public discourse over the weekend following a high-profile visit to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The 32 year old music star was accompanied by nightlife magnate Cubana Chief Priest and talent manager Ubi Franklin.
The trio was warmly received by the President inside his office, where they shared laughs and pleasantries in a series of now-viral clips circulating on social media.
During the brief interaction, Davido introduced his companions to the President, highlighting their allegiance to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“They are both your members, sir. They are APC,” he said with a grin, prompting Ubi Franklin to recall his campaign involvement in 2023. I went to 15 states, Franklin told the President, who responded with a smile, “Very good. We succeeded and made it to the presidency.”Cubana Chief Priest took the moment to project ahead, declaring, “We will succeed again in 2027,” a comment met with chuckles and approving nods from the room.
The meeting was part of a broader tour by Davido and his entourage, who also visited Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, and Vice President Kashim Shettima earlier in the week.
The visit has sparked a wave of criticism online, with many Nigerians accusing the singer of inconsistency.
Just weeks ago, Davido had voiced strong concerns about Nigeria’s economic crisis in a U.S. interview, urging African-Americans to think twice before visiting.
Leave America and go where? he had asked. “It is not cool back home. The economy now is in shambles, the exchange rate is messed up, and the price of petroleum is too high.”
Now, critics are questioning why Davido would publicly fraternize with the very administration he recently appeared to condemn.
Many on social media see the gesture as a case of double standards, highlighting the growing disillusionment with celebrities who appear to blur the line between activism and political favoritism.
As the conversation rages online, neither Davido nor his team has issued a formal statement addressing the backlash.
