The 22nd National Sports Festival, dubbed the “Gateway Games,” promises to be a spectacle of sport and culture as it officially opens today at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media, Kola Daniel, Olopade confirmed that two of Nigeria’s biggest musical talents, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, and Bukola Elemide, better known as Asa, will headline the opening ceremony.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Ogun State Government have pulled out all the stops to deliver what NSC Director General Bukola Olopade describes as a “world-class event” that will rival the grandeur of the Olympics.
The event, set to commence at 5 p.m., will be declared open by Vice President Kashim Shettima, adding a layer of national significance to the festivities.
This is our own Olympics,” Olopade declared, emphasizing the festival’s ambition to showcase Nigeria’s sporting prowess and organizational excellence on a global scale. The NSC chief, who also chairs the Main Organizing Committee, has spent the past two years assuring skeptics that Ogun State would host the most memorable National Sports Festival to date.
I have spent the last two years saying Ogun State will host the best festival, but doubters never believed, he said. “Beyond the aesthetic you are seeing here today, from the opening ceremony to the Games proper, you will be seeing the best.”
The opening ceremony promises to be a dazzling affair, with Olopade teasing surprises that will keep Nigerians “glued to their television.” While he revealed that Asa will open the show with her soulful and evocative performances and Davido will bring his high-energy Afrobeats to close the event, he remained tight-lipped about the “in-between” acts, hinting at an unforgettable lineup.
This strategic pairing of Asa’s introspective artistry with Davido’s electrifying stage presence is expected to set a vibrant tone for the festival, blending Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage with its modern musical dominance.
