Authorities confirmed on Friday that they have detained 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, the man believed to have fatally shot right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, a close ally of President Donald Trump.

Robinson was arrested in St. George, Utah, about 250 miles from Orem, where Kirk was killed on Wednesday during a speech at Utah Valley University. Officials revealed that his family played a role in turning him in after he suggested he was responsible for the shooting.

The Attack

Kirk, who co-founded a major conservative youth movement in 2012, was delivering a speech around noon when a gunshot rang out. The 31-year-old collapsed with a neck wound, captured in a video taken nearby. He was pronounced dead soon after, with Trump first announcing the news.

Investigators said Robinson used a high-powered bolt-action rifle from a rooftop nearly 200 yards (185 meters) away, lying prone to enhance his accuracy.

The gunman who shot dead US right-wing youth leader Charlie Kirk in a targeted killing remained at large Thursday but authorities said they have video images of the suspect and have recovered a “high-powered” rifle. Kirk, a 31-year-old superstar on the Republican right who was credited with helping Donald Trump return to the presidency last year, was shot while addressing a large crowd at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. Motive and Clues

While the motive remains unclear, authorities pointed to writings found on bullet casings at the scene. One read, “Hey, fascist! Catch!” while another was inscribed with “Bella ciao,” referencing an anti-fascist song from World War II. Other markings appeared linked to online gaming culture. Officials confirmed Robinson was not a student at the university.

Kirk was a polarizing figure—celebrated by conservatives for his activism and communication skills, but criticized for his hardline stances on race, gender, and gun rights.

Political Fallout

The killing has deepened concern over political violence in the United States, where mass shootings and attacks on public figures are frequent. Trump initially blamed “the radical left” but later described Kirk as “an advocate of nonviolence,” urging a calm response.

Trump announced that Kirk would be awarded the Medal of Freedom posthumously and confirmed he would personally attend the funeral. Vice President JD Vance accompanied Kirk’s coffin on Air Force 2 to his home city of Phoenix.
