The Benue State Government has confirmed the rescue of nine worshippers who were abducted during a midnight prayer session at Saint John Catholic Church in the Ojije area of Utonkon community, Ado Local Government Area.
In a statement issued by the Governor’s Technical Adviser on Media, Publicity and Strategic Communication, Solomon Iorpev, Governor Hyacinth Alia praised security operatives for their prompt intervention.

He described the successful rescue as a “significant breakthrough.”
The governor reassured residents that security agencies would continue to collaborate closely with local vigilante groups to curb kidnapping and prevent similar incidents. He also appealed to the public to provide timely and credible information that could assist authorities in tracking down criminals.
Following the abduction and other attacks recorded in Benue South, the governor convened a high-level security meeting on February 13, 2026, at the Palace of the Och’Idoma in Otukpo.
The meeting brought together members of the Idoma Traditional Council and top security officials. During the session, Governor Alia issued a directive for the immediate rescue of the abducted worshippers.
Abduction

Gunmen had kidnapped the nine worshippers during a church vigil last Sunday, sparking fear and tension across the community.
A former councillor representing Ukwuenyo Ward, Emmanuel Udah, confirmed the incident and described it as “a targeted and planned crime against the Church.” He said residents were traumatised and increasingly anxious over the recurring attacks.
Udah called on authorities to reinforce security presence in affected communities, warning that residents felt abandoned despite repeated security breaches.
Earlier, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Udeme Edet, confirmed that nine worshippers were abducted during the attack.

She stated that the Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Emenari, deployed tactical teams in collaboration with local vigilantes to pursue the perpetrators and ensure the safe release of the victims. She added that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
