Babachir Lawal, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), has formally ended his membership with the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a definitive break from the ruling party.
His resignation was made public through a letter addressed to the APC chairman of his local ward—Banshika Ward in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
Dated June 29, 2025, the letter was personally signed by Lawal, who stated that his departure from the party takes effect immediately. He did not reveal the exact party he intends to align with next but assured that he would soon disclose his new political affiliation.
His decision, he wrote, is part of a larger effort “to join other compatriots in working towards making Nigeria a better living place for all Nigerians.”
Lawal’s exit from the APC comes amid heightened political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, and speculation had intensified in recent weeks following his visible presence at key opposition gatherings.
Notably, photos circulating on social media show the former SGF in the company of prominent opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and other political heavyweights such as former Senator Binani Ahmed, who was the APC’s gubernatorial candidate in Adamawa State during the last election.
The viral images also feature former Senators Ahmed Barata and Abdulazeez Nyako, among others. Many of those pictured are believed to be key players in the emerging Nigerian National Opposition Coalition—an alliance aimed at unseating the APC in 2027.
Babachir Lawal, who served in the Buhari administration before being dismissed in 2017 amid corruption allegations, has remained an influential political voice, particularly in northern Nigeria. Though he maintained ties with the APC for years, he had been increasingly vocal about his dissatisfaction with the party’s direction under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership.
His departure adds momentum to what analysts describe as a growing wave of defections and intra-party unrest, signaling that the 2027 race may be shaped as much by former allies-turned-critics as by longstanding opposition candidates.
