The headquarters of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) has confirmed that the explosion that occurred at about 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 24, 2025, at a mosque within Gamboru Market in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council was caused by a suicide bomber.
The confirmation was contained in a statement issued by the spokesman of the Theatre Command, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, who disclosed that preliminary investigations pointed to a suspected Boko Haram Terrorist carrying out the attack.

According to him, “preliminary findings indicated the incident was caused by a suspected Boko Haram Terrorist (BHT) suicide bomber, who detonated an improvised explosive device, killing himself and two civilians on the scene”.
He explained that security forces responded swiftly after the blast, noting that, “The Troops, in conjunction with the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, other sister security agencies, Borno State Government, and NEMA, responded promptly, secured, and cordoned off the affected area to prevent further harm and ensure public safety”.
Uba stated that those affected were immediately taken to health facilities for treatment, adding that the casualties were evacuated to the General Hospital and the Teaching Hospital in Maiduguri for urgent medical attention.

He further revealed that 32 civilians sustained varying degrees of injuries in the attack. However, two of those injured later died at the hospital, while two others remain in critical condition.
“The remaining injured persons are stable and receiving appropriate medical care,” he said.
While reassuring residents of their safety during the festive period, Lt. Col. Uba noted that troops and other security agencies have intensified surveillance and security measures across Maiduguri and its surrounding areas to forestall further attacks.

Meanwhile, Vice President Kashim Shettima has condemned the incident, stating that it would not weaken the nation’s resolve to confront insecurity. In a statement issued by his media aide, Stanley Nkwocha, the Vice President said security agencies are actively working to apprehend those responsible.
“The Federal Government will not tolerate any attempt to undermine the peace and security of our nation. Our security agencies are working around the clock to ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous crime are brought to justice immediately,” the statement read in part.
