The 11th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), one of Nigeria’s most prestigious entertainment award ceremonies, has been thrust into the spotlight following explosive allegations of bias and favoritism.
Controversial singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has accused the AMVCA organizers of unfairly overlooking veteran actor and producer Ibrahim Chatta, reigniting a heated debate about the integrity of Nigeria’s award culture.
In a video posted to his Instagram account, Portable passionately defended Chatta, who was nominated for Best Lead Actor for his critically acclaimed role in House of GAA. The award, however, was clinched by Femi Adebayo for his performance in Seven Doors, a decision that Portable claims reflects a broader pattern of industry bias.
“My fans, there is a gang up in the Nigerian entertainment industry, even in Nollywood,” Portable declared. “They didn’t give Ibrahim Chatta an award at the 11th AMVCA despite his impeccable acting. That was how I was also snubbed by The Headies Awards.”
Portable’s remarks strike at the heart of a recurring critique of Nigeria’s entertainment industry, where accusations of favoritism, clout-chasing, and financial influence have long cast a shadow over award ceremonies.
The singer went further, questioning the value of such accolades in a country grappling with economic challenges. “We don’t need awards. We need food, we need money,” he said, adding, “We have money, but we can’t use money to buy awards like some persons.” His comments resonate with a growing sentiment among fans and industry insiders who believe that recognition often hinges on connections rather than talent.
This is not the first time Chatta has been at the center of such controversy. In 2023, the versatile actor, known for his commanding performances in Yoruba and English-language films, publicly expressed frustration over his lack of AMVCA nominations.
At the time, he hinted at a “conspiracy” within the industry, suggesting that his outspoken nature and refusal to conform to certain industry norms may have cost him recognition. Chatta’s 2023 claims sparked widespread debate, with fans and colleagues rallying behind him, while others dismissed his allegations as sour grapes.
This year’s snub, according to Portable, is yet another chapter in what he perceives as a deliberate effort to marginalize Chatta. “Ibrahim Chatta, if they don’t award you, God will reward you. My boss, you are my mentor. I love you,” Portable said, framing Chatta as a victim of systemic bias but a figure of resilience and divine favor.
Not everyone agrees with Portable’s narrative. Some industry insiders argue that the AMVCA’s competitive nature means tough decisions are inevitable.
