Akon’s Wife Files for Divorce Days Before 29th Wedding Anniversary, Cites Irreconcilable Differences

In a stunning turn of events that has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry, Tomeka Thiam, the longtime wife of Grammy-nominated R&B superstar Akon, has filed for divorce just four days before the couple was set to celebrate their 29th wedding anniversary.

Court documents obtained exclusively by PEOPLE magazine reveal that Thiam submitted her divorce petition on Thursday, September 11th, citing the standard legal grounds of “irreconcilable differences.” The timing of the filing—so close to what would have been a significant milestone in their nearly three-decade marriage—raises questions about what may have precipitated this dramatic decision.

The legal proceedings promise to be complex, with custody of the couple’s 17-year-old daughter, Journey, at the center of the dispute. Thiam is seeking joint legal custody while requesting primary physical custody, an arrangement that would allow Akon visitation rights with his teenage daughter. The filing also indicates Thiam is pursuing spousal support while simultaneously requesting the court deny any financial support to the 52-year-old musician.

Notably absent from the court documents is a specific date of separation, leaving legal observers to speculate about the timeline of the couple’s marital breakdown. This omission could prove significant as divorce proceedings unfold, particularly regarding asset division and custody arrangements.

The divorce filing comes against the backdrop of Akon’s well-documented commitment to polygamy, a practice he has defended publicly as an integral part of his Senegalese cultural heritage. In a revealing 2022 interview on The Zeze Mills Show, the “Smack That” hitmaker opened up about his unconventional family structure, confirming he has nine children and describing polygamy as “normal” within his cultural framework.

“The flaw that the Western world made is they created all these rules without putting nature into account,” Akon stated during that interview, offering insight into his worldview that may have created tension within his marriage to Thiam.

The artist’s commitment to this lifestyle became even more apparent in 2023 when singer Amirror publicly identified herself as one of Akon’s four wives. According to Amirror, the women maintain separate households across multiple locations, including Atlanta, Los Angeles, and various African countries. She characterized the arrangement as cultural rather than exploitative, though acknowledged the inherent challenges: “Every woman wants to be the only one, and it’s okay. But this is our culture—you either accept it or you don’t.”

For Thiam, it appears acceptance may have reached its breaking point. Sources close to the situation suggest the divorce filing represents the culmination of years of strain between Akon’s traditional African values and the realities of maintaining a marriage within Western legal and social frameworks.

The musician, whose real name is Aliaune Damala Badara Akon Thiam, has built a career spanning over two decades with hits like “Don’t Matter” and “Lonely” and collaborations with major artists including Eminem, Snoop Dogg, and Lady Gaga. Beyond music, he has established himself as a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist, particularly through his work bringing electricity to rural African communities.

Despite his professional success, Akon has been candid about the challenges of balancing his polygamous lifestyle with parental responsibilities. In his 2022 interview, he acknowledged that while he may not always be present for traditional family milestones like holidays or school events, he remains committed to supporting all his children and their mothers through modern technology and consistent financial support.

“My job is to raise my kids to be responsible, to be understanding, and to protect their mother,” he explained, a statement that now takes on additional significance in light of the divorce proceedings.

As this high-profile divorce case proceeds through the courts, it promises to shed light on the complex intersection of cultural traditions, modern family law, and celebrity relationships. The outcome could set precedents for how American courts handle custody and support arrangements in polygamous relationships, even when only one marriage is legally recognized.

For now, both parties have remained silent about the specifics of their marital breakdown, with legal representatives handling all communications. The entertainment industry and fans worldwide will be watching closely as one of R&B’s most distinctive voices navigates this personal crisis while maintaining his professional obligations and complex family structure.

The divorce filing marks the end of an era for one of music’s most unconventional marriages, raising questions about whether traditional cultural practices can survive within the constraints of Western legal systems and social expectations.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Akon’s wife of nearly 29 years, Tomeka Thiam, filed for divorce just days before their wedding anniversary, citing irreconcilable differences. The split appears rooted in cultural conflict—Akon openly practices polygamy as part of his Senegalese heritage, maintaining multiple wives across different cities, while Thiam sought a traditional Western marriage.

The divorce involves custody of their 17-year-old daughter and highlights the fundamental challenge of reconciling African cultural practices with Western legal and social expectations in modern relationships.
