An Air Force Alpha Jet went down near Karabonde in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State on Saturday evening, but both pilots survived after ejecting moments before the aircraft burst into flames.
Lapai TV, a digital broadcaster based in Niger State, confirmed the incident, reporting that the jet crashed around 4:10 p.m. after developing trouble shortly after take-off.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that the aircraft descended dangerously close to the community before the pilots took decisive action. “The jet landed close to town, and fortunately, the pilots ejected safely,” an eyewitness explained, describing the tense moments leading up to the crash.
The aircraft had departed from the Kainji Air Force Base, located just a short distance from Karabonde.

Nigerian Air Force Reacts
In its response to the emergency, the Nigerian Air Force praised the professionalism and swift judgment of the two pilots whose actions prevented loss of life.
According to a statement issued by Director of NAF Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the jet encountered an in-flight emergency during a post-inspection functional check shortly after departing from the Kainji base. The pilots, he noted, responded with “remarkable composure” by steering the aircraft away from residential areas before safely ejecting.
Ejodame confirmed that the pilots are currently undergoing routine medical evaluations.
Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, the Chief of the Air Staff, commended the crew for demonstrating “courage, discipline and sound judgement” during the crisis. He has ordered the establishment of a Board of Inquiry to determine the exact cause of the emergency.

The Nigerian Air Force reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining strict safety protocols, ensuring the welfare of its personnel, and protecting citizens in accordance with its constitutional responsibilities.
