This was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday and signed by Oseyemi Oluwatuyi.

According to the statement, the extension applies only to institutions that formally requested additional time, enabling eligible students within those institutions to complete their loan applications.

“The Nigerian Education Loan Fund has approved an extension of its Student Loan Application Portal for institutions that have formally requested additional time for the 2025/2026 academic session,” the statement read.

Speaking on the development, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the fund, Akintunde Sawyerr, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to ensuring that students who qualify for the scheme can benefit from it.

“NELFUND remains committed to ensuring that eligible students across participating institutions have the opportunity to access the student loan programme,” he said.

The fund encouraged students in the affected institutions to make use of the extension period to complete and submit their applications through the official portal.

It also stressed that the programme is guided by principles of transparency and accountability while providing sustainable financial solutions aimed at removing barriers to higher education in the country.

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund was established to administer the national student loan scheme, which was signed into law by Bola Ahmed Tinubu in April 2024.

The initiative provides interest-free loans to students in public tertiary institutions across Nigeria to help cover tuition fees and living expenses.

Under the scheme, beneficiaries are expected to repay the loans after completing their studies and securing employment, with the goal of expanding access to higher education for students from low-income backgrounds.

What you should know

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund was created to manage Nigeria’s national student loan scheme aimed at improving access to tertiary education.

Signed into law by Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2024, the programme offers interest-free loans to students in public universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

The initiative is designed to reduce financial barriers to education while ensuring repayment begins only after beneficiaries secure employment, making it easier for students from low-income families to pursue higher education.
