Afrobeats Star Mr Eazi Declears Presidential Ambitions in Surprise Video

Celebrated Afrobeats artist and business magnate Mr Eazi has thrown his hat into the presidential ring, announcing his intention to run for the highest political office in an unspecified African nation.

The 33-year-old Nigerian-born singer, whose real name is Oluwatosin Ajibade, made the unexpected announcement via a video message shared with his millions of followers across social media platforms. In the brief but pointed address, the “Leg Over” hitmaker revealed that the decision came after considerable soul-searching about his role in shaping Africa’s future.

“I have been thinking about it. I think it’s time to share it with you guys,” Mr Eazi stated in the video, his trademark casual demeanor intact despite the gravity of the announcement. The artist, known for his pioneering role in popularizing Afrobeats globally, positioned himself as a new kind of political candidate—one motivated by service rather than personal enrichment.

“Some of you might be from some countries, specifically in Africa, and you are looking for a president—a president who is not looking for money and power but is forward-thinking, young, active, and can move your country better,” he continued. “So, I’m officially putting myself forward for the presidency.”

The announcement is particularly intriguing given Mr Eazi’s deliberate vagueness about which African country he intends to contest in. Political analysts suggest this could be a strategic move to gauge public interest across multiple nations, or potentially indicate that the artist is still weighing his options regarding where to make his political debut.

Mr Eazi’s potential pivot to politics isn’t entirely surprising to those who have followed his career trajectory. Beyond his musical achievements, the entertainer has built a formidable reputation as a savvy entrepreneur and investor. He is the founder of emPawa Africa, a talent incubation initiative that has supported emerging artists across the continent, and has made significant investments in Africa’s fintech and creative economy sectors through his venture capital activities.

His business acumen and pan-African vision have earned him recognition far beyond the music industry, including speaking engagements at major global forums and partnerships with international organizations focused on African development.

Mr Eazi’s announcement adds his name to a growing list of entertainment personalities across Africa who have transitioned—or attempted to transition—into politics. From Liberia’s George Weah, who went from football legend to president, to Uganda’s Bobi Wine, who transformed from pop star to opposition leader, the continent has witnessed numerous examples of celebrities leveraging their popularity for political ambitions.

However, the path from entertainment to governance has proven challenging for many. Critics often question whether celebrity status and business success translate into the complex skills required for effective political leadership and public administration.

As of now, several crucial questions remain unanswered. Mr Eazi has not specified which country he intends to contest in, whether he plans to run independently or under an existing political party, or what his policy platform might entail beyond being “forward-thinking” and “active.”

Political observers are also curious about the timing of the announcement and whether the artist intends to maintain his music and business ventures alongside a political campaign, or if this represents a complete career change.

The lighthearted tone of the announcement has also sparked debate about whether this is a serious political endeavor or perhaps a publicity campaign for an upcoming project—a question that will likely only be answered in the coming weeks as Mr Eazi hopefully provides more concrete details about his presidential aspirations.

For now, Africa’s political landscape has a new potential player, and millions across the continent will be watching closely to see if this Afrobeats pioneer can remix the political playbook as successfully as he did the music industry.
