Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf on Monday paid a visit to President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja, a move that has further fuelled speculation surrounding his political future.
Yusuf was sighted entering the President’s office at about 4:13 p.m., wearing his familiar white flowing outfit and red Kwankwasiyya cap. The meeting marked his first publicly known engagement with President Tinubu since the President returned from the 2026 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.

The visit comes amid persistent reports suggesting that the Kano governor may be weighing a possible defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). According to political insiders, discussions around the potential switch began earlier this month but have since lost momentum due to unresolved concerns.
Sources with knowledge of the talks revealed that negotiations reportedly slowed after the APC leadership declined to offer a written commitment guaranteeing Yusuf an automatic governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.
At the same time, the likelihood of Yusuf leaving the NNPP has sparked strong reactions within the party. Former Kano State governor and NNPP national leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has openly criticised the idea, characterising it as a departure from the party’s principles.

Kwankwaso has also warned that such a move could carry significant political consequences for Yusuf as preparations begin for the 2027 polls.
As of the time this report was filed, neither the Presidency nor the Kano State Government had released any official statement clarifying the purpose or outcome of the meeting between the governor and the President.
