Martins Vincent Otse, a prominent Nigerian social media figure known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), was detained by police in Abuja following his public allegations against Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank). Otse had accused the bank of unauthorized transactions from his mother’s account, prompting his arrest on Friday.

His lawyer, Barrister Deji Adeyanju, confirmed the incident on Twitter, stating that officers apprehended Otse at a GTBank branch in Abuja’s Area 3. Adeyanju criticized the arrest, calling it “unacceptable” and emphasizing that “demanding accountability from institutions is not a crime.”

In subsequent updates, Adeyanju clarified that Otse was taken into custody alongside a friend referred to as C Park, while his mother, linked to the disputed account, was not detained. The lawyer continues to challenge the grounds for the arrest, advocating for transparency in the case.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

The arrest of Martins Vincent Otse, “VeryDarkMan,” is a complex case that intertwines issues of free speech, institutional accountability, and the role of law enforcement in Nigeria.

VDM’s allegations of unauthorized deductions from his mother’s GTBank account highlight legitimate concerns about banking transparency, but his public and confrontational approach may have escalated the situation, prompting GTBank to involve the police.

The arrest of VDM has sparked debate about the balance between activism and legal boundaries.
