FG Announces New Rules For University Admission
The Federal Government has announced a set of rules to tighten university admissions and stop institutions from admitting students beyond their approved capacity.
The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, said universities must follow approved admission procedures and ensure that the number of students admitted is within the capacity approved by regulatory authorities.
The minister warned that institutions would no longer be allowed to admit students far above their approved carrying capacity, noting that a school approved to admit 100 students should not go ahead to admit about 1,000 students.
He said such practices put pressure on lecturers, classrooms, laboratories, libraries and other facilities needed to provide quality education.
The Federal Government also warned against illegal admissions conducted outside approved regulatory frameworks, saying the problem had resulted in hundreds of thousands of students being admitted through improper channels.
Alausa said institutions and officials responsible for violating the admission rules would be held accountable.
According to him, officials who fail to act on admission violations risk losing their jobs, while private institutions that breach regulatory requirements could have their licences withdrawn.
The minister said the government would also strengthen the accreditation and monitoring of universities, polytechnics and colleges of education to ensure that institutions maintain the facilities, staff and resources required for the number of students they admit.
