FIFA, CAF Freeze NFF Electoral Process

Nigerian football’s turbulent year escalated this week as FIFA and CAF froze the NFF’s electoral process, halting the leadership transition set to culminate in a September 27 congress in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

The intervention, delivered in a letter dated 7 September 2026 from FIFA Chief Member Associations Officer Elkhan Mammadov to NFF Deputy General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme, marks one of the most significant external interventions in Nigerian football governance in recent memory.

It comes at the end of a month that saw the abrupt unraveling of the federation’s top leadership.

The crisis traces back to August 27, when NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau resigned 34 days before the scheduled end of his four-year tenure.

His departure triggered a cascade: General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and several members of the Executive Committee followed him out the door within days, according to multiple Nigerian outlets tracking the fallout.

In the vacuum, Ikpeme was elevated to oversee the NFF Secretariat as interim General Secretary, while Ademola Olajire stepped in as interim Deputy General Secretary.

The resignations did not occur in a vacuum of public goodwill. They landed amid what reporters have described as sustained fury over the state of the national teams.

The Super Eagles missed out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup after losing to DR Congo on penalties in the African play-off final, a gutting result for a country that measures its footballing self-worth by World Cup qualification.

Weeks later came a second, arguably more painful blow: the Super Falcons lost their Women’s World Cup qualification play-off to South Africa, ending Nigeria’s run of appearing at every edition of the tournament since it began in 1991.

For a program that has long been the standard-bearer of women’s football on the continent, that streak’s end proved a breaking point for public patience with the federation’s leadership.

The road to this week’s suspension order ran through Zurich. On September 1, FIFA and CAF convened a meeting at the Home of FIFA involving the NFF administration and representatives of the Federal Government of Nigeria to discuss the unfolding situation and, per several reports, a proposed reform process for the federation. That meeting appears to have set the stage for this week’s formal written directive.

In the letter, Mammadov stated that FIFA and CAF were examining developments through several lenses at once the legal, governance, administrative, and electoral dimensions of the crisis following notifications of the president’s, the Executive Committee’s, and the General Secretary’s resignations, as well as correspondence from other Nigerian football stakeholders.

Crucially, the letter draws a hard line: no further movement on the electoral process until FIFA and CAF say otherwise. The bodies described the suspension as necessary to preserve the status quo while they complete their assessment and consult relevant stakeholders.

Ikpeme, notably, has now been designated the primary conduit between Abuja and world football’s governing institutions during this period, an indication of how seriously FIFA and CAF are treating continuity of communication amid the chaos.

The timing carries its own weight. The NFF’s elective congress had been penciled in for September 27 in Lafia, a date that, as of this week, is effectively dead in the water.

The NFF had already suspended preparations for the congress following the mass resignations of its principal officials, but FIFA and CAF’s letter removes any ambiguity: the process is now formally on ice pending their findings.

FIFA and CAF have signaled they intend to send a joint fact-finding delegation to Abuja “at the earliest possible opportunity.” That mission is expected to sit down with NFF administrators, federation members, electoral bodies, and Federal Government officials, including the National Sports Commission, which has been pushing publicly for sweeping reforms of the sport’s administration since the World Cup qualification failures.

The stated purpose of the visit is to establish the facts, hear out the competing camps within Nigerian football, and determine whether the matter needs to be referred further under FIFA, CAF, or NFF statutes. Only after that groundwork is FIFA and CAF expected to weigh whether to bring recommendations to their own decision-making bodies.

Both organizations were notably careful to manage expectations. They stressed that no conclusions have been drawn and cautioned against reading suspension as a prelude to punishment language that will do little to calm nerves in a football community bracing for the possibility of a FIFA ban, the sport’s most feared sanction, but which for now leaves the door open to a negotiated path back to stability.

For a federation already reeling from its teams’ failures on the pitch, the coming weeks of external scrutiny add a new front to a crisis that shows no sign of resolving quickly. What happens in Abuja when the joint mission arrives may determine not just who leads Nigerian football next, but under what terms and under whose watch.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

FIFA and CAF have suspended the NFF’s electoral process, halting the September 27 congress in Lafia while they investigate the leadership vacuum left by the resignations of President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, and the Executive Committee. The key thing to know: nothing has been decided yet.

No sanctions, no verdict, no timeline for elections to resume—just a freeze while a joint FIFA-CAF mission heads to Abuja to establish facts and hear from stakeholders. Nigerian football’s leadership question is now on hold and in international hands until that assessment is complete.
