Augustine “Jay-Jay” Okocha has received a retroactive “Superior Player of the Match” award, nearly 30 years on, for his role in one of the Super Eagles’ most memorable World Cup wins.

The 52-year-old former captain took to Instagram on Thursday to unveil the gleaming silver trophy, pulling it from a custom presentation case in a video that has since circulated widely among Nigerian football fans.

In the clip, a visibly delighted Okocha explained the honour was tied to Nigeria’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Spain on June 13, 1998, at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes, a match still regarded as one of the great World Cup shocks of its era.

“Hello, this is JJ Okocha. I’m about to unveil this special award being given to me by FIFA,” he said, before crediting Michelob ULTRA and Copa90 for organizing the gesture and expressing his gratitude for the recognition.

That night in Nantes remains etched in Nigerian football folklore. Twice behind against a star-studded Spanish side, Bora Milutinović’s men twice fought back, with Mutiu Adepoju notching a crucial equalizer before Sunday Oliseh’s thunderous long-range strike sealed a famous win.

The result, paired with a victory over Bulgaria, propelled Nigeria into the knockout rounds as group winners, though their tournament ultimately ended in heartbreak with a 4-1 Round of 16 defeat to Denmark.

The timing of the award is notable, arriving just as the football world turns its attention to the 2026 World Cup, set to be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

For many, it serves as a fitting reminder of Okocha’s enduring legacy as one of African football’s most gifted entertainers, a status he first cemented at the 1994 World Cup in the United States, where his mesmerizing dribbling in a Round of 16 defeat to Italy still stands as a World Cup record for the most successful dribbles completed by a player in a single match.

Three decades on, Okocha’s flair continues to be celebrated, proof that in football, true magic never fades.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Okocha’s belated “Superior Player of the Match” award honours his pivotal role in Nigeria’s iconic 3-2 comeback win over Spain at the 1998 World Cup, a result that helped the Super Eagles top their group.

The recognition, coming as the 2026 World Cup is on, underscores Okocha’s lasting status as one of Africa’s most talented and entertaining footballers, a legacy already cemented by his World Cup dribbling record set in 1994.
