Reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain produced a remarkable late surge to defeat Chelsea 5–2 in a thrilling first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 encounter on Wednesday.

Two late goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and a costly error from Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen helped the French side secure a commanding advantage at the Parc des Princes.

PSG vs Chelsea

Chelsea had looked set to return to London with a valuable draw after fighting back twice during the opening hour of the match.

Bradley Barcola opened the scoring early for PSG, but Malo Gusto quickly restored parity for Chelsea.

The hosts regained the lead shortly before halftime through a superb finish by Ousmane Dembele, only for Enzo Fernandez to equalise again early in the second half and make it 2–2.

However, the match turned decisively in PSG’s favour in the closing stages.

A careless pass from Jorgensen was intercepted, allowing Vitinha to produce a delightful lob in the 74th minute that restored the hosts’ lead.

Substitute Kvaratskhelia then delivered a stunning individual strike four minutes from full time before adding another goal in stoppage time to complete a dramatic victory.

The result gives PSG a significant advantage ahead of the return leg at Stamford Bridge next Tuesday and places them firmly on course for the quarter-finals.

The clash also marked the first meeting between the clubs since Chelsea defeated PSG 3–0 in the FIFA Club World Cup Final last July.

Nine of Chelsea’s starting lineup from that match were included again, although Jorgensen replaced Robert Sanchez in goal and Wesley Fofana started in defence.

The English club are also under new leadership, with Liam Rosenior taking charge in January following the departure of Enzo Maresca.

Rosenior’s return to France added another storyline to the contest, having previously impressed during an 18-month spell managing Strasbourg, another club within the same ownership group as Chelsea.

Despite showing resilience earlier in the match, Chelsea’s hopes faded as PSG rediscovered the intensity that helped them win last season’s Champions League.

Manager Luis Enrique has struggled at times to replicate last year’s dominant form, with his side entering the match after a mixed run of results in Europe.

PSG currently sit narrowly ahead of Lens at the top of Ligue 1 and have already been eliminated from the domestic cup competition.

Nevertheless, they began the match with intensity. Barcola’s opener came after Joao Neves headed the ball down for him to control before firing a powerful shot in off the crossbar.

The hosts continued to threaten as Dembele struck the post before Barcola narrowly missed the target.

Chelsea eventually equalised when Fernandez delivered a precise pass to Gusto, who finished from the right flank with a strike that PSG goalkeeper Matvei Safonov could not keep out.

Safonov later redeemed himself with an important save from Cole Palmer, moments before Dembele restored PSG’s lead after being released by Desire Doue and finishing after a clever feint past the defence.

Chelsea once again responded early in the second half when Pedro Neto surged down the left wing and cut the ball back for Fernandez to score with a first-time strike.

But the visitors’ resistance eventually collapsed following Jorgensen’s costly error that allowed Barcola to intercept the pass before Vitinha lobbed the ball into the net.

Kvaratskhelia then delivered a dazzling solo run and powerful finish before adding a final goal from an assist by Achraf Hakimi, completing an unforgettable night for the Paris side.

What you should know

Paris Saint-Germain have been one of Europe’s strongest teams in recent seasons and are the defending champions of the UEFA Champions League.

Their clash with Chelsea is one of the standout ties of the round of 16.

With a three-goal advantage heading into the second leg in London, PSG now hold a strong position to reach the quarter-finals, although Chelsea will hope to produce a major comeback at Stamford Bridge.
