A stunning first-half hat-trick from Federico Valverde powered Real Madrid to a commanding 3-0 victory over Manchester City in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 clash on Wednesday.

The Spanish giants, missing several key players including Kylian Mbappe, delivered one of their most impressive performances of the season at the Santiago Bernabeu, with Valverde scoring three goals in a devastating 22-minute spell.

Despite the convincing win, Vinicius Junior missed a second-half penalty that could have extended Madrid’s advantage before the return leg scheduled to take place in Manchester next Tuesday.

Although Real Madrid are the record 15-time champions of the competition, their inconsistent form this season had cast doubt on their chances heading into what has become one of the modern Champions League’s most intense rivalries.

City, who lifted their first European title in 2023, had previously defeated Madrid during the competition’s league phase and arrived with a strengthened squad.

However, Madrid produced arguably their most complete display of the campaign to leave Pep Guardiola’s side stunned.

Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa was forced to cope without injured stars including Jude Bellingham and Rodrygo Goes, but handed a starting role to promising 18-year-old midfielder Thiago Pitarch after several impressive recent performances.

Guardiola opted for an attacking approach, deploying only two central midfielders while leaving Phil Foden and Rayan Cherki on the bench. New additions Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi made their Champions League debuts.

City initially appeared comfortable as Trent Alexander-Arnold kept Erling Haaland quiet and Semenyo forced a save from Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

Madrid, however, struck first against the run of play. Courtois launched a long ball that found Valverde after Nico O’Reilly misjudged its flight. The Uruguayan raced clear, rounded goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and calmly scored in the 20th minute.

Seven minutes later, Madrid doubled their lead when Vinicius Junior set up Valverde, who drilled another precise finish past Donnarumma.

After a difficult start to the season in which he often played at right-back under former coach Xabi Alonso, Valverde has flourished since Arbeloa took charge in January.

The 27-year-old had already boosted team morale with a dramatic late winner against Celta Vigo in La Liga days earlier.

Valverde completed his first career hat-trick before halftime with the most spectacular goal of the night.

He expertly flicked a pass from Brahim Diaz over Guehi before volleying powerfully into the net, sending the Bernabeu crowd into celebration.

Madrid nearly added a fourth shortly after the break when Diaz forced another save from Donnarumma as City struggled to recover.

Vinicius Junior then had the chance to extend the lead from the penalty spot after Donnarumma fouled him, but the Italian goalkeeper guessed correctly and saved the low effort.

City’s top scorer Haaland remained largely ineffective throughout the match as Madrid defenders Antonio Rudiger and Dean Huijsen successfully contained him, prompting Guardiola to substitute the striker while chasing a goal.

The visitors’ best chance came when O’Reilly broke through late in the match, but Courtois produced a remarkable leg save to preserve Madrid’s clean sheet and maintain their commanding advantage ahead of the second leg.

What you should know

Real Madrid remain the most successful club in UEFA Champions League history with 15 titles.

Their clashes with Manchester City in recent seasons have developed into one of the tournament’s most intense rivalries.

This first-leg result gives Madrid a strong advantage heading into the return match in England, although City are known for their attacking strength and ability to overturn deficits in European competition.
