Manchester United’s difficult season took another painful turn as they were eliminated from the FA Cup in a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout defeat to Fulham in the fifth round on Sunday.

Defending their title, United fell behind at Old Trafford when Calvin Bassey opened the scoring for Fulham in the first half. Bruno Fernandes salvaged a 1-1 draw by equalizing in the second half, forcing extra time.

However, in the shootout, Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno emerged as the hero, making crucial saves against Victor Lindelof and Joshua Zirkzee, while the visitors converted all four of their penalties.

Another Low in a Tough Season
United’s performance was met with boos from the home crowd at halftime, highlighting the ongoing struggles of a team currently languishing in 14th place in the Premier League. Having reached the FA Cup final in the previous two seasons—defeating Manchester City to lift the trophy last year—United will now miss out on a trip to Wembley this season.

With their domestic cup hopes over, their only remaining chance for silverware is in the Europa League.

The club has endured a turbulent week, with 200 job cuts announced and underwhelming performances, including a lackluster draw against Everton and a narrow victory over struggling Ipswich.

Manager Ruben Amorim, who took over in November after Erik ten Hag’s departure, admitted the challenges his team is facing. United now turn their focus to the Europa League last-16 tie against Real Sociedad on Thursday before hosting Arsenal in the Premier League.

From the start, it was clear United were in for a difficult afternoon. Rasmus Hojlund, struggling with an 18-game goalless streak, fired over the bar early on. Christian Eriksen forced a save from Leno, but the frustration in the stands was evident.

Discontent among fans grew louder, with chants against club owners the Glazer family and investor Jim Ratcliffe. Banners protesting ticket price increases were also displayed.

Fulham made the most of United’s set-piece vulnerability just before halftime. Andreas Pereira’s corner was flicked on by Rodrigo Muniz, and Bassey reacted quicker than Noussair Mazraoui to score from close range.

Alejandro Garnacho, who was left on the bench after his frustrated reaction to being substituted against Ipswich, was introduced in the 53rd minute. Though his arrival energized the crowd, United’s performance remained uninspiring.

Goalkeeper Andre Onana was forced into action to deny Emile Smith Rowe before Fernandes briefly lifted United’s hopes in the 71st minute. The captain latched onto a Diogo Dalot cross and finished clinically into the far corner.

Despite recent comeback results against Ipswich and Everton, United found no way past Fulham this time. Onana made another key stop from Smith Rowe in stoppage time, but extra time yielded few clear chances. Chido Obi came close for United, while Ryan Sessegnon’s powerful effort was denied by Onana.

In the decisive penalty shootout, Fulham held their nerve, converting all four attempts. Leno’s saves from Lindelof and Zirkzee sealed United’s fate, ending their FA Cup defense and compounding their season’s struggles.

With their Wembley hopes dashed, United must now shift focus to European competition as they attempt to salvage their campaign.
