The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly urged the Federal Government to abandon any proposed increase in electricity tariffs, warning that it will mobilize mass resistance against further hikes.

Additionally, the NLC has issued a separate threat to telecommunications companies, cautioning that it may shut down their operations if they fail to implement the 35% tariff increase previously agreed upon with the government. This demand comes in response to the 50% tariff hike approved by the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), which the union rejects.

In a communique released after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Yola, Adamawa State, the NLCcondemned what it described as a “sham reclassification” of electricity consumers by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). The union accused NERC of attempting to force consumers from lower tariff bands to Band A under the pretense of service improvements while actually imposing “unjustified extortion” on the public.
