The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.

The former minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) was picked up shortly after being released on bail by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The arrest is connected to allegations that he intercepted communications of the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.

According to The Nation, El-Rufai may be arraigned in the Federal High Court, Abuja, today on a three-count charge.

The EFCC granted him bail with conditions that he remains available to clarify issues and complete necessary documentation.

The bail took into account El-Rufai’s ongoing cases with both the DSS and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), as well as the fact that the DSS has seized his passport to restrict his travel.

El-Rufai regained his freedom around 7:30 pm after completing his bail paperwork, but he was immediately apprehended by DSS officials as he exited the EFCC premises.

The security agency said the arrest was necessary for him to provide a formal statement regarding certain communications linked to the National Security Adviser.

Investigators indicated that the statement is part of the legal process ahead of his possible court arraignment.

The charges against El-Rufai include admitting on a television programme that he and others intercepted the NSA’s phone communications, failing to report others involved in similar actions, and using technical equipment in ways that could threaten public safety and national security.

The offences fall under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act 2024 and the Nigerian Communications Act 2003, which carry penalties ranging from fines to imprisonment, depending on conviction.
