French President Emmanuel Macron said on Saturday that he plans to ask US President Donald Trump to refrain from imposing tariffs that would “make allies suffer.”

During a visit to the French Agriculture Show, Macron explained that he would emphasize to Trump that among friends, tariffs should not inflict hardship.

Since taking office last month, Trump has rolled out new tariffs across various sectors, prompting protests from key allies including Canada, Mexico, and the EU.

Macron stressed the importance of calming tensions ahead of his upcoming meeting with Trump in Washington, noting, “I will explain to him that between allies, you don’t make each other suffer with tariffs. I will talk to him about this because we need to calm things down.” He added that agriculture, one of France’s major export sectors, is especially vulnerable to these trade measures.
