Wilfred Ndidi Mourns Father as Super Eagles, Club Send Condolences

Nigeria’s national team captain, Wilfred Ndidi, is mourning the death of his father, Sunday Ndidi. Reports indicate that Sunday Ndidi lost his life in a road accident on Tuesday around the Umunede area of Delta State.

Confirming the tragic development, Turkish club Besiktas, where the Nigerian international plays, expressed deep sorrow in a message shared on its official X account.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of our footballer Wilfred Ndidi’s esteemed father, Sunday Ndidi, in a fatal traffic accident,” the club wrote.

“May Allah grant mercy to the deceased; we extend our condolences to our footballer Wilfred Ndidi, his family, and loved ones.”

In an emotional reaction, Ndidi reflected on his final interaction with his father, sharing a heartfelt message on his Instagram story in which he expressed shock and pain over the loss.

“Eeraq you call me this morning with excitement in your voice but deep down na goodbye you dey tell me … What about things we talked about, so we no go talk again Na only memories?” he posted.

The midfielder, who featured for Nigeria at the recently concluded 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, also recalled a special moment he dedicated to his father while playing for the national team. Ndidi referenced his goal celebration after scoring his first-ever goal for Nigeria in a dramatic 3-2 victory over Tunisia.

“Even when I score my first national team goal I do that Papilo [Kanu Nwankwo] dance for you, but you just go like that EERAQ,” he said.

The Super Eagles have also reacted to the loss, extending their sympathies and offering prayers to the player and his family during the difficult period.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time, Wilfred,” the message read.

Wilfred Ndidi is one of Nigeria’s most consistent midfielders and currently serves as captain of the Super Eagles. 

His father’s death comes shortly after the national team’s campaign at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where Ndidi played a key role. Tributes from his club, Besiktas, and the Nigerian national team highlight the strong support surrounding the player during this period of grief. 

Ndidi’s emotional messages reflect the close bond he shared with his father and the personal impact of the loss beyond the football pitch.
