The Oyo State Police Command has intercepted a truck transporting materials believed to be explosive devices during an intelligence-driven operation in Saki, Oyo State.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ayanlade Olayinka, said the interception followed credible intelligence gathered during a routine stop-and-search exercise.

Oyo police command

According to the police, operatives stopped the truck in Saki, secured the suspected explosive materials and immediately took them into custody for further investigation.

“Upon being briefed on the development, the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Femi Haruna, ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

“Consequently, specialised personnel of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit and the Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Unit were deployed to safely secure the items for safekeeping and forensic examination,” the statement said.

Truck Conveying Suspected Explosives

The command disclosed that a detailed forensic analysis is currently underway, alongside an intensive investigation to determine the exact nature of the intercepted materials and their intended purpose.

Police authorities also confirmed that the driver of the truck has been “taken into custody and is cooperating fully with investigators.”

The Commissioner of Police commended the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for his “leadership and support in strengthening proactive, intelligence-driven policing nationwide.”

Police standing

Reassuring residents, the police urged the public to remain calm, stressing that there was no immediate threat to safety.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains fully committed to the protection of lives and property. Members of the public are therefore urged to remain calm, as there is no cause for panic,” the statement added, noting that updates would be provided as investigations continue.

What you should know
The interception highlights ongoing efforts by security agencies to prevent potential threats through intelligence-led policing.

The involvement of specialised EOD and CBRN units suggests the materials could pose serious danger if mishandled.

While investigations are still ongoing, the police have assured residents that there is no immediate risk and that all necessary measures are being taken to determine the origin, nature, and possible destination of the suspected explosive materials.
