Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has exercised his constitutional power of prerogative of mercy by approving the unconditional release of seven inmates serving different jail terms in correctional centres across the state.

This development was disclosed in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, who explained that the decision was taken to commemorate the governor’s 61st birthday and to further consolidate the clemency earlier granted on January 1, 2026, as part of the New Year celebrations.

According to the statement, Governor Aiyedatiwa had earlier approved clemency for a total of 77 inmates, following recommendations submitted by the Ondo State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.

From that number, the seven convicts granted outright pardon in the latest approval were carefully chosen based on comprehensive and verified assessments indicating genuine remorse, consistent good conduct, participation in rehabilitation programmes, and strong potential for smooth reintegration into society.

The statement noted that the governor’s decision to approve their unconditional release underscores his administration’s commitment to restorative justice, reducing congestion in correctional facilities, and offering deserving individuals a second chance after demonstrating significant personal reform.

It added that the gesture reflects the belief of the state government that punishment should not only serve as retribution but also as an opportunity for correction, rehabilitation, and reintegration into the community.

Reacting to the development, the Chairman of the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, who also serves as the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of Ondo State, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, SAN, praised the governor for what he described as a deliberate and humane decision.

Ajulo stated that the move reinforces the administration’s resolve to strike a balance between justice and compassion, strengthen reforms within the justice sector, and foster a society where rehabilitation and redemption are achievable for those willing to change.
