The recent 50% tariff hike by telecom operators in Nigeria has triggered widespread outrage among subscribers and workers, with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) calling for a nationwide boycott starting March 1. This move comes after telecom firms implemented the increase without waiting for a review panel’s recommendations.

While the NLC pushes for a total shutdown, the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers insists on regulatory sanctions instead. Lawmakers have also directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Minister of Communications to halt the hike, citing economic hardships.

Despite initial agreements, MTN was the only operator to have implemented the increase by Tuesday, sparking accusations of breaching public trust. The NLC has urged workers to boycott telecom services daily from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. until February 2025, warning of stricter measures if demands are not met.

While the NCC remains silent on the issue, some industry leaders support the tariff hike, citing rising operational costs. However, critics argue that telecom firms acted prematurely, undermining negotiations and failing to consider consumer affordability.
