Former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher strongly criticised Mohamed Salah on Monday following the Egyptian forward’s explosive remarks aimed at Reds manager Arne Slot.

Salah claimed he had been “thrown under a bus” and insisted he had no relationship with Slot after being left out of the starting lineup for last Saturday’s 3-3 draw with Leeds.

It marked the third straight match in which Slot opted to start without Salah, who has struggled to rediscover his usual form this season. Salah’s surprising comments to journalists quickly rippled through the football world, prompting Liverpool to remove the 33-year-old from their squad for Tuesday’s Champions League fixture against Inter Milan.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Carragher, a Champions League winner with Liverpool in 2005, condemned Salah’s behaviour. He said, “I thought it was a disgrace what he did after the game.” Carragher argued that the comments were not merely emotional but calculated, noting that Salah rarely speaks in mixed zones and does so only when it appears coordinated with his agent to maximise impact.

According to Carragher, Salah chose the moment deliberately: “He’s chosen this weekend to do this now,” he said, suggesting the forward waited for a disappointing result so the club would already be reeling before launching criticism at the manager. He hinted that the move could be an attempt to put Slot under pressure or even push him toward dismissal.

Salah has been a central figure in Liverpool’s success over the last eight years, winning two Premier League titles and securing a Champions League triumph. Although he signed a new contract in April, his comments raised questions about his future. Salah hinted he may have played his final game for the club, especially as he prepares to join the Egyptian squad for the African Cup of Nations following Liverpool’s Premier League match against Brighton at Anfield on Saturday.

The forward has been linked repeatedly with a lucrative switch to the Saudi Pro League, a move that continues to attract speculation. Carragher added that the club made the right call in preventing Salah from travelling for European duty, though he admitted uncertainty about whether the forward will don a Liverpool jersey again. “I hope he does, because he’s one of the greatest players we’ve ever had,” he said, adding that continued behaviour of this nature could complicate any return.

What You Should Know

Mohamed Salah’s tense relationship with Liverpool manager Arne Slot escalated after the forward said he was “thrown under a bus,” prompting the club to drop him ahead of their Champions League match.

Jamie Carragher condemned Salah’s actions, describing them as orchestrated rather than emotional. Salah’s omission from three consecutive starting lineups, combined with declining form and rumours of a move to the Saudi Pro League, has intensified discussions about his long-term future at Anfield.

With Salah heading to the African Cup of Nations soon, uncertainty surrounds whether he will play for Liverpool again once he returns.
