The United States Embassy in Nigeria, in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, has signed a $90,000 grant agreement aimed at preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage, with a focus on the ancient Nok artifacts.

The project will be carried out by the Wheyham Foundation in collaboration with the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) and Yale University Art Gallery. Its objectives include documenting, protecting, and promoting Nigeria’s rich archaeological legacy.

Speaking at the signing ceremony in Abuja, the Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, Ms. Hannatu Musawa, emphasized Nigeria’s dedication to safeguarding its historical treasures.

She highlighted the significance of the Nok terracotta artifacts, which date back to 500 BCE in Kaduna State, stressing that they must be meticulously preserved for future generations.

“The grant will help ensure that Nigeria’s cultural heritage is carefully protected and passed down. This initiative includes digital documentation, museum education programs, and expert-led training sessions for NCMM staff by Yale University specialists,” Musawa stated.

She further outlined key aspects of the project, such as site security measures to prevent theft and vandalism, as well as public awareness campaigns through educational initiatives and documentaries.

“The digital inventory of Nok artifacts developed through this initiative will serve as a model for other museums across Nigeria, strengthening our ability to document and safeguard cultural artifacts nationwide,” she added.

US Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Richard Mills, highlighted the significance of the initiative, noting that preserving Nok artifacts would contribute to a deeper understanding of the history and identity of the Nok people.

Chairman of the Wheyham Foundation, Mr. Yahaya Maikori, described the project as part of the US government’s ongoing efforts to support Nigeria’s cultural preservation, with a particular focus on the Nok civilization.

The Nok culture, one of West Africa’s oldest known civilizations, is renowned for its unique terracotta sculptures, which remain an essential part of Nigeria’s historical and artistic heritage.
