Guardiola’s Rotation Misfires As Manchester City Collapse 2-0 To Leverkusen In Champions League

Summary

Manchester City endured a stunning home defeat in the Champions League on Tuesday as Pep Guardiola’s heavy squad rotation fell apart, leaving the English champions exposed in a disappointing 2-0 loss to Bayer Leverkusen.

Guardiola opted to rest several of his major players at the Etihad Stadium, leaving Erling Haaland, Ruben Dias, Bernardo Silva and Gianluigi Donnarumma out of the initial lineup. The coach’s gamble quickly turned into frustration as Leverkusen capitalised on a below-par performance from City’s fringe players.

Alex Grimaldo struck first in the opening half, punishing City’s defensive hesitation, before Patrik Schick added a second after the interval. The goals triggered frustration among home supporters, who voiced their displeasure at the final whistle.

This is the first time since 2018—a run of 24 group-stage home matches—that City have suffered a Champions League defeat at the Etihad before the knockout rounds. It also marked their second straight loss following Saturday’s 2-1 setback at Newcastle in the Premier League.

City’s league form has been shaky, with four defeats so far, leaving them seven points behind leaders Arsenal. While Tuesday’s loss does not immediately derail their Champions League hopes, Guardiola received a clear reminder that his backup options may not be as reliable as previously assumed.

The night marked Guardiola’s 100th Champions League match in charge of City, but unlike many of the previous 99—which delivered 62 victories and the club’s historic 2023 European triumph—this outing lacked quality and conviction.

The manager recently admitted feeling “embarrassed and ashamed” after a confrontation with a cameraman following the controversial loss at Newcastle, and Tuesday’s disjointed performance gave his players little to be proud of.

Guardiola had fielded an unchanged XI for three consecutive games, but he abandoned that consistency by introducing 10 alterations. The decision may have been influenced by City’s packed December schedule, which includes frequent fixtures and an upcoming Champions League showdown with Real Madrid.

City’s Defensive Issues on Display

Nathan Ake nearly opened the scoring inside five minutes after connecting with Oscar Bobb’s pass from a recycled corner, only for Mark Flekken to make a strong fingertip save. Despite City’s dominance in possession, their attacks lacked sharpness, and defensive lapses proved costly.

In the 23rd minute, Malik Tillman and Christian Kofane easily combined to set up Grimaldo, who drilled a composed strike past James Trafford from close range. Guardiola’s irritation was visible, especially with Abdukodir Khusanov’s slow reaction in closing down the shooter.

It marked the first time City had fallen behind in this season’s Champions League, yet their attempt to respond lacked urgency. Omar Marmoush struggled to fill Haaland’s role, though Bobb nearly bundled in a leveller with a deflected effort that Flekken smothered.

Tijjani Reijnders had City’s best chance before halftime but fired straight at Flekken after bursting into the box.

During the interval, Guardiola turned to Jeremy Doku, Phil Foden and Nico O’Reilly to refresh the side. O’Reilly immediately tested Flekken with a powerful long-range effort, but City’s reshuffled defence faltered again minutes later.

In the 54th minute, Ibrahim Maza curled a dangerous delivery into the area, and Schick outmuscled Ake to glance a header into the far corner. Marmoush wasted another opportunity to pull one back, and after unsuccessful penalty appeals, Guardiola turned to Haaland.

However, the Norwegian’s poor run of form continued. After missing several key chances at Newcastle, he miscontrolled a promising opportunity, allowing Flekken to smother the ball in a moment that summed up City’s night.

What You Should Know

Manchester City’s surprising 2-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen marked a rare home setback in the Champions League group stage and highlighted the vulnerability of Guardiola’s rotated squad.

Despite dominating possession, City’s defence and attack lacked precision, leading to a result that underscored their recent inconsistency across competitions.

The loss also reinforces concerns about squad depth as they head into a demanding December schedule.
