The European Union has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy by supporting initiatives aimed at building the capacity of young people in politics and governance. Through its Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria Programme, the EU is funding Yiaga Africa’s Constituency Office Internship Programme, which provides young individuals with hands-on experience in legislative processes and constituency engagement.

Launched in December 2024 and set to conclude in February 2025, the three-month internship offers participants the opportunity to work in lawmakers’ constituency offices, allowing them to gain insight into the legislative process while actively contributing to policy discussions and governance initiatives. The EU’s Deputy Head of Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Zissimos Vergos, emphasized that democracy thrives on responsible leadership and citizen engagement, highlighting the critical role young people play in shaping Nigeria’s democratic landscape.

Yiaga Africa’s Programme Manager, Yetunde Bakarei, underscored the initiative’s impact in strengthening ties between lawmakers and their constituents while encouraging youth participation in governance. She expressed gratitude for the EU’s support, which has enabled the organization to place interns in strategic positions where they can contribute meaningfully to policy-making.

Interns in the programme have also shared personal accounts of how the experience has shaped their careers and aspirations. Olaiya Oluwadamilola credited the initiative with boosting her confidence and communication skills, inspiring her to pursue a career in politics. Similarly, Salihu Gode praised the EU’s inclusive governance efforts and stressed the importance of mentorship in political development. She expressed her commitment to advancing women’s participation in politics, an area actively supported by the EU.

With initiatives like this internship programme, the EU continues to play a significant role in empowering Nigeria’s youth and fostering a more inclusive and participatory democratic system.
