Former Senate President Ahmed Lawan has urged Nigerians to accord the nation’s armed forces the highest level of respect, following the recent altercation between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and a naval officer in Abuja.

Speaking to journalists after meeting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House, Lawan applauded the military for their sacrifices in protecting lives and maintaining national stability. He stressed that every citizen, regardless of political or social standing, must acknowledge the dedication of security personnel.

Wike and Soldiers

Lawan noted that the government has continued to provide substantial resources to the armed forces and other security agencies, saying it was important to ensure accountability for such investments.

He added that Nigerians should show appreciation for the military’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation. According to him, the men and women in uniform remain central to national unity and deserve public support.

His comments followed the controversy surrounding an encounter between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and a naval officer over a disputed plot of land in Abuja’s Gaduwa District. A video of the confrontation circulated online, showing Wike exchanging words with military personnel reportedly guarding a site linked to a former Chief of Naval Staff.

Reports indicated that FCT officials had attempted to stop an unauthorised construction before being prevented from accessing the location. When Wike arrived, he accused the officers of overreach and misuse of military privilege.

Reacting to the situation, Wike explained that he stepped in after government officials were allegedly assaulted while carrying out lawful duties. He described the deployment of soldiers by a retired officer as “an abuse of authority,” insisting that no individual is permitted to use security personnel for personal advantage.

He questioned why someone of such senior military background would not follow proper channels if there were issues surrounding the land. Wike maintained that the FCT Administration had no documentation indicating a legal allocation for the disputed site, expressing concern over what he viewed as attempts to intimidate officials through military influence.

He emphasised that impunity would not be tolerated, adding that security personnel cannot be used to undermine lawful government processes.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru responded to the incident, stating that any security operative carrying out “lawful duty” would receive protection. He noted that the Defence Headquarters was reviewing the situation to prevent similar misunderstandings and strengthen cooperation between military and civilian authorities.

What You Should Know
This incident highlights growing tensions between civilian authorities and security personnel over issues of land administration and the limits of military influence in civilian affairs.

Ahmed Lawan’s comments emphasise the need for Nigerians to respect the armed forces, recognising their essential role in national security. However, Wike’s position reflects concerns about the misuse of military authority for personal matters, stressing that no one is exempt from lawful procedures.

The Defence Ministry’s response indicates efforts to balance accountability with support for officers acting within the law, underscoring the importance of clarity in interactions between civil institutions and the military.
