The House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review has proposed the creation of 31 new states across Nigeria, which would increase the total number of states in the country to 67.

This proposal was presented during Thursday’s plenary session by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who presided in the absence of Speaker Tajudeen Abbas. The committee, chaired by Kalu, suggested state creation across different geopolitical zones: six in North Central, four in North East, five in North West, five in South East, four in South-South, and seven in South West.

The proposal outlines the legislative requirements for state creation, emphasizing that an Act of the National Assembly must secure at least a two-thirds majority vote for approval. Additionally, the endorsement of the affected House of Assembly and Local Government Council is necessary before the request is forwarded to the National Assembly.

Proposed New States

–North Central: Okun, Okura, and Confluence (from Kogi); Benue Ala and Apa (from Benue); FCT State

–North East: Amana (from Adamawa); Katagum (from Bauchi); Savannah (from Borno); Muri (from Taraba)

–North West: New Kaduna and Gujarat (from Kaduna); Tiga and Ari (from Kano); Kainji (from Kebbi)

–South East: Etiti, Orashi, Adada (from Enugu); Orlu, Aba

–South-South: Ogoja (from Cross River); Warri (from Delta); Ori and Obolo (from Rivers)

–South West: Torumbe (from Ondo); Ibadan (from Oyo); Lagoon (from Lagos); Ijebu (from Ogun); Oke Ogun/Ijesha (from Oyo/Ogun/Osun)

The committee has requested that proposals be submitted in hard copies to the House Secretariat and electronically to the designated email address. The proposal is expected to undergo further legislative scrutiny before any changes can be made to Nigeria’s state structure.
