Kemi Badenoch, the newly elected leader of the UK Conservative Party, has proposed significant changes to the UK’s immigration policies. Her announcement includes extending the waiting period for migrants to apply for indefinite leave to remain (ILR) from five to ten years and increasing the minimum time required before applying for British citizenship to 15 years.
She also outlined stricter eligibility criteria, stating that applicants must be “net contributors” with a high salary, and those who have a criminal record or rely on social benefits will be permanently barred from settlement in the UK. Additionally, anyone who enters the country illegally or overstays their visa will be prohibited from obtaining leave to remain or a passport.
Badenoch’s policies aim to reduce immigration and prioritize British citizens’ needs, citing concerns that the current system is “unsustainable.” While many Conservative supporters back her stance, critics, including opposition parties and human rights groups, argue that such policies could harm the UK’s economy and global reputation.
