Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has urged his team and supporters to look ahead rather than dwell on past failures, following Cristiano Ronaldo’s scathing remarks about the club’s struggles.

Ronaldo, a former United star, criticized the club’s direction earlier this week, saying Amorim could not perform “miracles” at a club that is “not on a good path.” He added that “they need to change and it’s not only about the coach and players.”

Responding to his former Portugal teammate’s comments ahead of United’s weekend clash with Tottenham Hotspur, Amorim acknowledged Ronaldo’s influence but emphasized the need to move forward.

“Of course he knows and he has a huge impact in everything he said,” Amorim remarked. “What we need to focus on is in the future. We know that we as a club made a lot of mistakes in the past, but we are trying to change that. So, let’s not focus on what happened. Let’s focus on what we are doing now, and we are doing that.”

The 40-year-old coach highlighted that the club’s ongoing restructuring was beginning to yield positive results. “We are changing a lot of things in the structure, the way we do things, the way we want the players to behave,” he said. “We are improving, so let’s focus on the way we are doing things. We are improving, let’s continue and forget a little bit the past.”

United endured a disappointing 2024/25 season, finishing 15th in the Premier League and losing the Europa League final to Spurs. Despite that, they head into Saturday’s encounter unbeaten in their last four league matches, including a morale-boosting 2-1 victory over champions Liverpool.

Reflecting on their evolution since May’s Europa League defeat, Amorim said, “First of all, the characteristics of the players. So, we are a better team, we play better, we understand the game better. I think we are more confident. We manage the moments of the game better.”

He added, “If you remember that game, they have that shot on the goal, they won the game. So, I expect a different game, that we can play better, but also to have a little bit luck to help us to win the game.”

Manchester United will be seeking to end their four-game losing streak against Spurs when they meet again this weekend.

What You Should Know
Ruben Amorim, appointed to rebuild Manchester United after a disastrous 2024/25 campaign, is focused on restoring the club’s competitive edge.

His comments come after Cristiano Ronaldo criticized United’s direction, saying the club’s problems extend beyond coaching. Amorim’s emphasis on structure, discipline, and player mentality reflects his long-term vision for rebuilding United’s identity.

The Portuguese coach, known for his tactical discipline and player development, faces the task of steering United back to the top tiers of English and European football.
