United States President Donald Trump has officially designated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” following allegations of widespread killings of Christians.

In a statement shared on his Truth Social platform on Friday, Trump described the situation as a “mass slaughter,” warning that Christianity in Nigeria faces an existential threat.

“Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter,” he wrote.

The US president added that his administration “cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening,” directing Congressman Riley Moore and House Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole to investigate the matter.

“I am hereby making Nigeria a ‘country of particular concern.’ But that is the least of it. When Christians, or any such group, is slaughtered like is happening in Nigeria (3,100 versus 4,476 worldwide), something must be done! I am asking Congressman Riley Moore, together with Chairman Tom Cole and the House Appropriations Committee, to immediately look into this matter and report back to me,” Trump stated.

He concluded by saying, “The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening in Nigeria and numerous other countries. We stand ready, willing, and able to save our Great Christian population around the World!”

FG Rejects Genocide Allegations

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris speaking

In response, Nigeria’s Federal Government dismissed the claims as “false, baseless, despicable, and divisive.”

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said attempts to portray Nigeria’s insecurity as a religious war were misleading and harmful.

“Portraying Nigeria’s security challenges as a targeted campaign against a single religious group is inaccurate and harmful,” he said.

He noted that both Christians and Muslims have been victims of terrorism and banditry, emphasizing that extremist groups target anyone who rejects their ideology.

Between May 2023 and February 2025, Idris disclosed that security forces killed over 13,500 terrorists and rescued nearly 10,000 hostages. He also cited the capture of top Ansaru leaders and more than 700 Boko Haram convictions as proof of progress in the fight against terrorism.

“These criminals target all who reject their murderous ideology, regardless of faith,” Idris asserted.

During a visit to President Bola Tinubu in Abuja on October 17, President Trump’s Senior Adviser on Arab and African Affairs, Massad Boulos, echoed similar sentiments.

“Those who know the terrain well know that terrorism has no colour, no religion, and no tribe,” Boulos said, stressing that extremist groups such as Boko Haram and ISIS have killed people of all faiths. “Any loss of life is one too many, and we should work together to end this.”

Senate Forms Committee on Religious Allegations

Nigerian senate

Amid growing international attention, the Nigerian Senate on October 14 constituted a 12-member ad-hoc committee to examine global concerns about the alleged persecution of Christians.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio tasked the committee with preparing a fact-based report to guide Nigeria’s diplomatic response.

“Our findings must be backed with verifiable facts and statistics,” Akpabio said, adding that the Senate would engage the U.S. Congress to correct what it described as “misleading narratives” about Nigeria’s security challenges.

CAN Urges Stronger Action

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN)

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) expressed deep concern over repeated attacks on Christian communities, calling on the government to intensify efforts to protect citizens.

CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, lamented that “these cries for justice and protection are too often met with delay or denial.”

He said CAN has been documenting religiously motivated violence, working with international partners, and even petitioning the International Criminal Court for intervention.

“The pain of Christian families torn apart by violence must never be treated as mere statistics,” the association stressed.

Minister Idris reiterated that Nigeria remains committed to freedom of religion and democracy as enshrined in the Constitution.

“It is doubtful that foreign interlopers are aware that the current heads of both the armed forces and the police are Christians,” he said, urging international observers to act responsibly and avoid sensational reporting.

“We urge all commentators to support Nigeria’s efforts in combating terrorism and criminality,” Idris concluded.

What You Should Know

President Donald Trump’s declaration places Nigeria under close US scrutiny for alleged Christian persecution.

While Trump called the killings a “mass slaughter,” Nigeria’s government dismissed the claim as a false narrative, insisting terrorism in the country affects all citizens regardless of religion.

The Senate has launched a committee to address international concerns, while CAN continues to call for stronger government action to protect Christian communities nationwide.
