The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has announced the suspension of its National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, following accusations of financial misconduct and misappropriation of party funds.

Also suspended are the party’s National Auditor, Nnadi Clarkson, and National Youth Leader, Chukwuma Uchechukwu.

The announcement was made through a statement issued by the SDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Aiyenigba, after a National Working Committee (NWC) meeting held on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.

According to the statement, “The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), on June 24, 2025, in exercise of its exclusive powers, in accordance with the provisions of Article 19.1, 19.301), and 19.5 of the 2022 Social Democratic Party Constitution (as Amended), placed the following underlisted Officers of the Party on suspension on grounds of the prima facie case of misconduct, financial misappropriation, malfeasance and fraudulent activities, gross abuse of office, among other infractions and contraventions of the Party’s Constitution against them. They are:

1. Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam (hitherto, the National Chairman)

    2. Mr. Ogbonna Chukwuma Uchechukwu (hitherto, the National Youth Leader)

    3. Mr. Clarkson Nnadi (hitherto, the National Auditor).”

SDP National Working Committee (NWC) meeting.

The party explained that the decision came after the adoption of the Disciplinary Committee’s report and a subsequent White Paper, which reviewed the findings and recommendations on the allegations brought against the affected officers.

It added that the move was necessary to “restore integrity, discipline, and internal order within the SDP,” while also revealing that other recommendations from the White Paper would soon be implemented to prevent future violations of party regulations.

Additionally, the party disclosed that some members identified as Adamu Abubakar Modibbo, Abubakar Dogara, Nuraddeen Bisalla, Solsuema Osaro, Ambo Ekpeyong, Eluwa Ifeanyi Henry, Humphrey Unwukaeze, and Judith Israel Shuaibu had unlawfully broken into the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja during the early hours of Monday, July 28, 2025.

“These daring intruders were arrested and detained along with burgled items found in their possession including sensitive official documents and valuables carted from the SDP Secretariat and are currently answering to their crimes in a court of law on arraignment against them by the Nigerian Police,” the statement added.

    What You Should Know

The suspension of Shehu Gabam marks a significant shake-up within the Social Democratic Party as it battles allegations of internal corruption and misconduct.

The disciplinary action, backed by the NWC and supported by constitutional provisions, aims to reaffirm the party’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

The incident involving an alleged break-in at the SDP headquarters further deepens the crisis, underscoring the need for stricter internal controls and enforcement of party discipline to maintain stability and credibility ahead of future political contests.
