Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has been handed a one-match touchline ban and fined £8,000 ($10,685) by the Football Association (FA) following his conduct during the club’s dramatic 2–1 Premier League victory over Liverpool on October 4.

The FA announced on Wednesday that Maresca had openly admitted the misconduct charge, which stemmed from dissent toward a referee’s decision and excessive celebration after Chelsea’s late winner at Stamford Bridge.

Enzo Maresca press conference

The Italian coach was first shown a yellow card for protesting a penalty call before receiving a second in the sixth minute of stoppage time after running down the touchline to jubilantly celebrate Estevao Willian’s angled strike that sealed the victory.

As a result, Maresca will serve his suspension on Saturday when Chelsea travel to face Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.

The October win over Liverpool was a crucial one for Chelsea, who had suffered two consecutive defeats beforehand. The emotional victory temporarily lifted the Blues to sixth place, easing pressure on Maresca, who had been facing mounting criticism over the team’s inconsistency.

Speaking afterward to Italian media, Maresca described his celebration as “an instinctive reaction,” saying that despite the disciplinary consequence, he had no regrets. “It was worth it even if I got sent off,” he reportedly said, reflecting the intensity of the moment and the relief that came with breaking a losing streak.

What You Should Know

Enzo Maresca, appointed Chelsea head coach to usher in a new era of disciplined, possession-based football, has faced early scrutiny following mixed results.

His one-match touchline ban highlights the fine line managers walk between passion and professionalism in high-pressure fixtures.

Despite the setback, Maresca’s spirited reaction after the Liverpool win has been seen by many fans as a sign of his deep commitment to turning Chelsea’s fortunes around.
