The Federal Government has officially launched a nationwide campaign targeting measles, polio, HPV immunisation, and interventions against neglected tropical diseases.

The event took place on Monday at the Banquet Hall of the State House in Abuja.

Polio vaccination

The campaign aims to eliminate measles in Nigeria by 2030 through strengthened routine immunisation, enhanced disease surveillance, and rapid outbreak response. It also focuses on integrating measles and rubella initiatives into primary health care and promoting the use of innovative health technologies.

According to officials, about 16 million children are expected to receive vaccines during the exercise. The integrated immunisation effort specifically targets children aged nine to fourteen with the Measles Rubella vaccine.

Measles vaccination

The event was attended by prominent traditional and religious leaders, including the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Sa’ad Abubakar; the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi; and the Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, Ignatius Kaigama. Representatives of international development partners were also present to lend their support.

What you should know

Nigeria’s renewed vaccination drive is part of its broader effort to curb preventable childhood diseases and improve public health outcomes.

By 2030, the government hopes to achieve full measles elimination and strengthen the country’s health infrastructure through integrated immunisation campaigns.
