Russian aerial assaults on Ukraine overnight left two civilians dead, even as Moscow reported a surge of Ukrainian drone strikes targeting its territory, including the capital.

According to Ukraine’s air force, Russia fired three missiles and 115 drones in the latest wave of attacks. Most were intercepted, but officials confirmed one death in the southern Zaporizhzhia region and another in Odesa.

“Russia continued its terror against the people of Ukraine, targeting the civilian population in multiple regions of the country,” Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said in a statement on social media. She once again pressed Kyiv’s allies to expedite the delivery of air defence systems, warning, “Every delay in strengthening Ukraine’s air defence means more lives lost.”

Meanwhile, Russia’s defence ministry reported the downing of 69 Ukrainian drones overnight, insisting that no damage was recorded. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said more than a dozen of the drones had targeted the Russian capital.

The escalation comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky prepares for a critical meeting with US President Donald Trump in New York, with Washington expressing growing frustration over Moscow’s refusal to halt its invasion.

What you should know

Ukraine continues to endure near-daily Russian strikes that target both infrastructure and civilians, with mounting calls for stronger Western support.

At the same time, Kyiv has intensified drone operations inside Russia, increasingly reaching Moscow. The conflict shows no sign of easing as Zelensky seeks firmer backing from Trump amid worsening humanitarian costs.
