Harry Kane scored twice as Bayern Munich defeated Chelsea 3-1 at the Allianz Arena in their Champions League opener on Wednesday night.

Michael Olise forced Trevoh Chalobah into an own goal after 20 minutes, before Kane converted a penalty to double Bayern’s lead. Cole Palmer briefly restored hope for Chelsea with a quick reply, but Kane struck again in the second half to seal victory for the hosts.

Kane, who now has 10 goals in just six games this season, admitted that playing against Premier League sides gives him extra motivation to “play better.” Bayern captain Manuel Neuer also reached a milestone with his 100th Champions League win, joining an elite group behind Cristiano Ronaldo, Thomas Mueller and Iker Casillas.

Bayern extended their remarkable record of winning 22 consecutive Champions League openers, dating back to 2002. For Chelsea, it was another disappointing night despite showing early intensity under coach Enzo Maresca, who had recalled Palmer and three others to the starting lineup after criticism for resting key players at the weekend.
