Ghanaian international and Villarreal midfielder Thomas Partey entered a plea of not guilty on Wednesday to multiple allegations of rape and sexual assault brought against him in the United Kingdom.
The 32-year-old, who previously played for Arsenal, faces five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. The alleged incidents reportedly occurred between 2021 and 2022, during his time with the Premier League club.
Partey, who left Arsenal at the end of June following the expiration of his contract, was formally charged just four days after parting ways with the London club. He appeared at Southwark Crown Court for a brief hearing where he confirmed his name and date of birth before denying all charges.
Judge Christopher Hehir, presiding over the case, confirmed that Partey’s trial would commence at the court on November 2, 2026. “Your trial will take place at this court on November 2 of next year, 2026,” Hehir stated, while acknowledging the delay. He explained the backlog facing the crown courts, saying, “Because you have bail, effectively you are sitting behind a queue of people in prison who are waiting to be tried.”
Partey was released on bail under the same conditions imposed at an earlier hearing. He is barred from contacting the three women involved and must notify the police of any permanent change of residence or international travel.
His latest court appearance came a day after featuring for Spanish side Villarreal in their Champions League fixture against Tottenham, which ended in a 1-0 defeat in London.
Partey began his Arsenal career in 2020 after moving from Atlético Madrid in a £45 million ($61 million) transfer. During his time at the club, he played 167 matches, scored nine goals, and became an influential figure in midfield. In the 2024/25 season alone, he made 52 appearances, scoring four times. He has also represented Ghana more than 50 times at international level.
Having joined Villarreal in August 2025, Partey continues his playing career in Spain while awaiting trial.
Commenting on the matter, an Arsenal spokesperson reiterated the club’s position: “The player’s contract ended on June 30. Due to ongoing legal proceedings, the club is unable to comment on the case.”
