Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana has completed a season-long loan move from Manchester United to Turkish side Trabzonspor, bringing temporary closure to weeks of speculation over his future at Old Trafford.
Onana, 29, joined United from Inter Milan in 2023 in a deal worth an initial €51 million, with an additional €4 million in potential add-ons. He capped his debut season in England by lifting the FA Cup but soon found himself under scrutiny for inconsistent displays. Last season, his erratic form and repeated clashes with manager Ruben Amorim cast doubt over his long-term role in the squad.

His troubles were compounded when a hamstring injury sidelined him during pre-season. On his return, Onana was at fault in United’s shock League Cup defeat to Grimsby, a performance that reignited concerns over his reliability. The subsequent arrival of Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Antwerp for €21 million, plus add-ons, all but confirmed Onana’s fall down the pecking order.

United confirmed the deal on Thursday, saying, “Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has joined Trabzonspor on loan for the duration of the 2025/26 season, subject to international clearance and registration. The move has been completed ahead of the Turkish transfer window closing on Friday. We would like to wish Andre good luck.”
The move allows Trabzonspor to bolster their squad with an experienced shot-stopper while United look to rebuild their goalkeeping department around new signing Lammens.

United return to action after the international break with a derby clash against Manchester City on Sunday, though Onana will be watching from afar as he begins a new chapter in Turkey.
