Liverpool on Monday secured the signing of Newcastle United’s star striker Alexander Isak in a British-record £125 million ($169 million) transfer, capping a dramatic saga that dominated the Premier League transfer window.

The 25-year-old Swedish international signed a six-year contract with the reigning Premier League champions, expressing his excitement about joining the club.

“I feel amazing,” Isak told Liverpool’s official website. “It’s been a long journey to get here. But I’m super-happy to be a part of this team, this club, and everything it stands for. It’s something I’m proud of, and I’m really looking forward to it. I’m just happy it’s done, and I can get back to work.”

Liverpool’s pursuit of Isak faced hurdles, with Newcastle rejecting a £110 million bid in August. Isak’s determination to secure the move, including training alone at his former club Real Sociedad and opting out of Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia due to a reported thigh injury, intensified the situation. He publicly accused Newcastle’s hierarchy of breaking a promise that he could leave if a suitable offer came from a top club.

Despite Newcastle manager Eddie Howe’s insistence on retaining Isak, who scored 27 goals in 42 appearances last season and helped secure Champions League qualification and a League Cup triumph, the club’s signing of Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade on Saturday paved the way for Isak’s departure. Isak underwent a medical in Merseyside on Monday, finalizing the transfer before the Premier League’s 6:00 PM GMT deadline.

Isak’s move pushes Liverpool’s summer spending to an estimated £416 million, surpassing Chelsea’s 2023 record of £400 million for a single transfer window by a Premier League club. Other major signings include Florian Wirtz (£100 million initial fee), Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecsi, and Giovanni Leoni. The deal for Isak also breaks the previous British transfer record of £107 million set by Chelsea for Enzo Fernandez in 2023.

Under manager Arne Slot, Liverpool aim to defend their Premier League title and compete for a seventh Champions League crown. A second consecutive Premier League win would see Liverpool become England’s most successful top-flight club with 21 titles, a feat not achieved consecutively since their three-year run from 1982 to 1984. Isak joins a formidable attacking lineup featuring Wirtz, Ekitike, Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, and Federico Chiesa.

This aggressive spending marks a shift from Liverpool’s relatively quiet 2024 transfer window, where Federico Chiesa was their only senior signing for £10 million. To fund their spree, Liverpool recouped approximately £190 million by selling players including Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Jarell Quansah, Caoimhin Kelleher, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Tyler Morton, and Ben Doak. Slot’s team currently leads the Premier League with a perfect record, having defeated Arsenal 1-0 on Sunday for their third consecutive victory to start the 2025-26 season.

What You Should Know

Liverpool signed Newcastle’s Alexander Isak for a British-record £125 million ($169 million) on September 1, 2025, with the 25-year-old Swedish striker inking a six-year deal.

The transfer, finalized after a rejected £110 million bid and Isak’s public push to leave Newcastle, takes Liverpool’s summer spending to £416 million, a Premier League record. Isak, who scored 27 goals last season, joins new signings like Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike, bolstering Liverpool’s attack as they aim to defend their Premier League title and chase a seventh Champions League trophy.

The club offset costs by raising £190 million through player sales. Liverpool’s perfect start to the season includes a 1-0 win over Arsenal.
