The All Progressives Congress (APC) emerged victorious in 20 local government areas during the recently concluded council elections in Rivers State.

Meanwhile, the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) managed to secure only two local government areas in the oil-rich state. In the councillorship elections, the APC also triumphed in 20 local government areas, with the PDP claiming three councils.

This marks a historic milestone, as it is the first time the APC has achieved such dominance in Rivers State since the restoration of democracy in 1999.

Rivers LG polls

The Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Dr. Michael Odey, announced the winners of the local government elections on Sunday at the commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt. No other political parties were represented in either the chairmanship or councillorship contests.

Voter turnout varied across the state. Rural areas saw significant participation, while urban centers such as Port Harcourt City, Obio/Akpor, and Akukutoro experienced high turnout in some polling units but lower participation in others.
