A group of Niger Delta youth leaders on Wednesday staged a protest at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) Towers in Abuja.

The protesters, who reportedly arrived around 6 a.m., blocked the entrance and exit gates of the company’s headquarters. Carrying banners with various inscriptions, they disrupted vehicular movement along Herbert Macaulay Way in the Central Business District.

One of the banners demanded the resignation of the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL, Engr. Bashir Ojulari, over alleged corruption and mismanagement. They also insisted that an indigene of the Niger Delta be appointed as the next GCEO of the corporation.

Security operatives, including officers of the Nigeria Police Force, were deployed to the scene to manage the situation, diverting traffic to one lane of the dual carriageway. Many workers were forced to park their vehicles at a distance due to the blockade.

What you should know

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) is the state-owned oil corporation responsible for managing Nigeria’s petroleum resources. The Niger Delta region, which produces the bulk of the nation’s crude oil, has long demanded greater inclusion in leadership positions within the oil sector.
