Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has taken a firm stance against criminal networks in the state, directing cultists, kidnappers, and other unlawful groups to vacate Edo immediately or be prepared to face decisive government action.

The governor’s warning came shortly after a major crackdown in Egbaen Community, along Upper Siluko Road in Egor Local Government Area, where security operatives demolished a building reportedly used for cult initiation and ritual activities.

The demolition was carried out by the Edo State Special Security Squad, known as Operation Flush Out Cultists and Kidnappers, in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies and local stakeholders.

Idemudia Noah, the Coordinator of the squad, disclosed that the property was tied to Marvelous Adetarami, a key figure of the Maphite cult group. According to him, Adetarami had converted the bungalow into both a shrine and a gathering spot for his members.

“We were here some days ago to seal up this building following allegations of cultism, ritual practices and other nefarious activities of suspected Maphite cult leader Marvelous Adetarami and his members,” Idemudia told reporters at the site.

He added that, despite the government’s initial order sealing off the structure, intelligence gathered later revealed that the suspects continued to convene at the location during night hours. This prompted the state to take the more radical step of demolishing the building.

“We got credible information that the suspected cult leader Marvellous Adetarami and his members still gathered to have their meetings in this sealed bungalow, where the horrible shrine was discovered,” he explained.

The demolition brought relief to the community, where residents had long lived in fear due to the criminal group’s activities. Many locals applauded the state’s swift intervention, describing it as a major step towards restoring peace.

“Neighbours and community members are all joyous seeing the building pulled down, as they have lived in fear following the suspect’s activities,” Idemudia added.

Reiterating Governor Okpebholo’s commitment, the security coordinator emphasized that Edo will no longer tolerate lawlessness. The administration, he said, is determined to foster an atmosphere where peace, security, and development can thrive.

“Edo State Government has promised hard times for those perpetrating criminal activities across the state. There is no hiding place for them. Edo is no longer a safe haven for crime or criminality,” he stated.

Meanwhile, security operatives have invited Adetarami for questioning regarding the allegations. However, reports indicate that he has failed to honor the summons, continuing to act with impunity.

Idemudia further appealed to citizens to remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities, stressing the importance of community collaboration in the fight against insecurity.

“We encourage neighbours and citizens across the state who notice such nefarious activities in their communities to inform security agencies. Together, we can ensure a safer Edo for all,” he said.

What you should know

Governor Monday Okpebholo has made security a central focus of his administration, launching aggressive operations to dismantle cult networks, kidnapping rings, and ritual practices in Edo State.

The recent demolition in Egbaen underscores his government’s determination to eradicate criminal enclaves and deny offenders any sanctuary. The operation, spearheaded by Operation Flush Out Cultists and Kidnappers, also demonstrates growing collaboration between security forces and communities.

While the prime suspect, Marvelous Adetarami, has yet to submit himself to law enforcement, the crackdown signals that Edo is no longer willing to tolerate impunity, with community members actively supporting government efforts.
