At the Alaska summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump presented a symbolic gesture, a letter from First Lady Melania Trump urging Putin to pursue peace for the sake of children.
The First Lady’s office reshared a Fox News article on Saturday that contained the letter, a day after the high-stakes meeting ended without a major breakthrough. According to reports, Putin read the “peace letter” immediately after receiving it from Trump, with both delegations watching closely.
“In today’s world, some children are forced to carry a quiet laughter, untouched by the darkness around them,” the letter read. Though Ukraine was not mentioned directly, the appeal was clear. “Mr Putin, you can singlehandedly restore their melodic laughter. In protecting the innocence of these children, you will do more than serve Russia alone—you serve humanity itself.”
The letter continued: “Such a bold idea transcends all human division, and you, Mr Putin, are fit to implement this vision with a stroke of the pen today. It is time.”
President Trump has previously credited his wife, who was born in Slovenia, with influencing his perspective on Putin. He recalled one exchange: “I go home, I tell the first lady, ‘you know, I spoke to Vladimir today, we had a wonderful conversation.’ And she said, ‘Oh really? Another city was just hit.’”
Since beginning his second term, Trump has pushed for rapprochement with Putin, campaigning on the promise to end the Ukraine war within 24 hours. While he initially placed blame on Ukraine for stalled negotiations, his tone shifted over time as Russian offensives continued.
Before the Alaska meeting, Trump had warned of “severe consequences” if Moscow did not agree to a ceasefire. However, after his talks with Putin, he dropped the demand, stating that the best path forward was to “go directly to a peace agreement.”
Putin, for his part, has long called for negotiations on a final peace settlement—a stance widely criticized by Ukraine and its European allies as a tactic to buy time and strengthen Russia’s battlefield position.
