Lionel Messi made a triumphant return from injury, scoring in the 84th minute to inspire Inter Miami to a 3-1 victory over defending MLS champions Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday.
The 38-year-old Argentine striker, who had been sidelined with what coach Javier Mascherano described as a “minor muscle injury,” came off the bench in the second half to change the game. Messi had missed Miami’s Leagues Cup clash with Pumas UNAM and an MLS defeat against Orlando City.
Mascherano explained that Messi’s minutes were carefully managed: “We had planned the match to give minutes to Leo. The idea was to give him 45 minutes so that he can find sensations.”
Miami took the lead in the 43rd minute through Jordi Alba, but Joseph Paintsil equalized for Galaxy in the 59th minute. Messi restored Miami’s advantage late in the game before Luis Suarez sealed the win in the 89th minute with an assist from Messi.
Messi, the reigning MLS Most Valuable Player, has now scored 19 goals and registered 10 assists in 19 MLS appearances this season. His return also boosts Miami ahead of their Leagues Cup quarter-final against Tigres on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, South Korean forward Son Heung-min secured his first MLS win in his first start for LAFC, contributing an assist in a 2-0 victory over New England. Marco Delgado and Mathieu Choiniere were the scorers for LAFC, who now sit fifth in the Western Conference.
