Cristian Romero has officially been appointed as Tottenham Hotspur’s new captain, succeeding club icon Son Heung-min, who left the North London side earlier this month for a move to LAFC.
Son, who had worn the captain’s armband for the past two seasons, played a pivotal role in Spurs’ recent success, notably leading them to their first major silverware in 17 years by winning the Europa League in May. His final appearance as captain came in that triumph before departing for the United States to join the MLS champions.
Romero, a consistent presence in the squad, had served as vice-captain for the past two years. The Argentine defender captained the team in the Europa League final victory over Manchester United, starting the match as skipper until Son came on in the second half. His leadership on that night now foreshadows his expanded role in the upcoming season.
The 27-year-old will officially lead Tottenham onto the pitch as captain when they face reigning European champions Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday.
Speaking to the club’s official website, new Spurs manager Thomas Frank praised Romero’s leadership qualities. “I had a good conversation with Cuti Romero and he’s going to be our captain. He was very honoured and very happy about it. It’s a big thing and should be to lead this wonderful club out on the pitch, not just for this Super Cup, but also throughout the season,” Frank said.
Frank went on to highlight Romero’s influence, adding, “I think he has all the right qualities. He leads from his behaviour on the pitch, driving the team forward in every way and outside the pitch he’s always pushing the team.”
Romero, who joined Tottenham from Atalanta four years ago, already has a decorated career. He was part of Argentina’s squad that lifted the 2022 FIFA World Cup, further underscoring his pedigree as a leader both domestically and internationally.
